The Incredible, Edible Dick Bruna

Let’s continue on the illustration tip and go over one of the pride and joys of the Netherlands, Dick Bruna. Creator of Niintje and all kinds of other fantastic artworks, this little rabbit has been called everything from “Miffy” (in countries outside of the Netherlands) to the inspiration for Hello Kitty.Nijntje’s name comes from the word “konijntje”, a Dutch word that means bunny and the name of a popular song here in the Netherlands by the AKA Junkies. Here in Amsterdam, you can get a plethera of her goods, including Dutch-style ceramic versions of her in the main tourist store located in Dam Square directly across from De Bijenkorf.
♥ THE DICK BRUNA HUIS (HOUSE)
One of the first things my Japanese friend Noelle did with her two year old daughter when they first arrived in the Netherlands was to run up to the Dick Bruna Huis in Utrecht which is a permanent space for all things Nintje at the Centraal Museum. According to her, “There was a giant, golden Miffy that Ima just stood in front of for like ten minutes and just said, ‘Woooooaaahhh…’”. If that doesn’t sell you on a train ticket up there, I don’t what will.♥ NIJNTJE GOES ON VACATION – THE LIVE MUSICAL!
Included in the merchandising opportunities of Nijntje/Miffy is a real, live traveling musical show in Dutch. This last run was in Rotterdam. I’m not sure where the next one will be, but you can find tickets and dates here.As much as I love Nijntje, I just don’t have the energy to comment positively on this. As a television show it’s adorable, but this display of human error is bordering on the way I felt about clowns as a child.
♥ DICK BRUNA’S ZWARTE BEERTJES AND OTHER DESIGNS
Miffy might be Bruna’s most famous creation, but it’s definitely not the only one. In fact, as a graphic designer for his father’s publishing house, Bruna has put together a mighty collection of book covers which can be found at this site, which sells hard-to-find and highly sought after Bruna books. Most of the covers designed by Bruna were for the “Zwarte Beetjes” (or Black Bears) book series in which titles like The Saint, James Bond, Maigret, Simeon, and Shakespeare were published in Dutch by Bruna & Zoon.

Petits Pierres for Thursday, Jan. 31
In effort to keep all the Pierres in the world updated on the ongoings of the interweb (especially ones that don’t quite understand Google Reader yet… Honey, I love you, I do, but I couldn’t have made it any simpler if I had recorded my shared rss feeds on a tape and played it on a Teddy Ruxpin doll that I placed next to you while you slept), I’m going to post my favorite things of the day as “Petit Pierres”. In fact, speaking of bears and love:
KARL LAGERFELD INSPIRES TEDDY BEAR

“The fuzzy Karl comes complete with dark glasses, a dark suit, high collar and logo belt buckle — nuclear-powered design prowess not included.”- From WWD
“FRIENDS WITH YOU” USB DRIVES

“FriendsWithYou is the newest entry into the mimobot Artist Series ‘08 and contains six adorable characters, so you’ll have plenty of options when it comes warming up the circuits of your lovin’ spoonful’s heart.”- From Josh Spears
EXHIBIT FEATURING TOYS AT MASS MOCA

“That’s essentially my father and me. My father is tied to a tree, with a light set up. I’m standing in a coracle with a pacifier in my mouth and the coracle has no prow, so it just floats like a lily pad. E.T. is reading from the book.”

Did Everybody Miss Tom Ford on CNN Last Night?
Never fear, CNN has it uploaded on their site which you can see here. Split in five different segments, the Art of Life program goes into the past and present business ventures of our little Tommy as well as a whole bizarre field trip to his favorite London art museums. At least there’s still some one out there who appreciates Damien Hirst and isn’t still pissed off at him for ushering in the new age of that horrible UK resident dumbass trollop-gone-artist, Tracy Emin.
She’s the person who sewed all the names of her previous lovers along with the words “Pysco Slut” on a tent, claiming that the misspelling some how gave it more meaning and was therefore art. Which is ironic because even though I think that’s complete bullshit (that any one in their right mind would sleep with a British Fem Troll), I do think that if we had put Tom Ford behind the slogan, he could have made marketing millions on it and therefore made it fashion. In all actuality, I don’t really like the guy, but his business sense is ruthless AND he talks like a complete robot.
TOM FORD: Walking, talking, stylish, powerpoint presentation.

Change the World – Stay Home

Art is for bitches. Big, dumbass bitches. It makes me so angry that I have to go out and find a job when other people can get commissioned do this:
Let me just poke some holes into this theory:
#1 – By registering on the site, AREN’T YOU PARTICIPATING IN SOCIAL CONNECTION?!
#2 – A lot of people go to scheduled events and don’t talk to people who are in their “community”. It’s called having a JOB.
