Screw the Swedes, the only way to learn how to dance is through the Indians.
Incidentally, it’s a sample used in the upcoming MIA album, KALA, which actually lives up to the hype of the artist for a change. I know a lot of people loved “Galang, Galang”, but you couldn’t flip it on 45 to dance to it. Her new single, “Boyz”, is something you could bootyshake your way through afternoons of housecleaning.
Of course, it’s true that I’m partial to using Indian samples in any music. You can’t grow up watching the Bollywood Music Video hour on Saturday mornings after Garfield and Friends and have it not make an impact on your personal listening skills. When the only other musical outlet you have at the age of 13 is alternative college radio, “Indie” is bound to get beaten out rhythmically by “Indian”. One of my favorite tracks with such samples is a cut from Adult Swim and Chocolate Industries’ track that features the mighty Mos Def. It’s bootyful:
